Determining factors of success for women managers in Spain

Abstract

Knowing the factors that lead to women’s professional success in Spain remains a critical challenge. Despite numerous studies by various authors, there is no consensus on which factors truly determine the success of women in managerial roles. This lack of agreement creates uncertainty for women aspiring to leadership positions, making it difficult to identify and apply the key elements necessary for success. The main objective of this study is to identify these factors of success for women in Spain, as well as provide recommendations to help women and to overcoming barriers. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining a literature review with qualitative and quantitative data collection through surveys, in depth-interviews and a focus group discussion. The findings reveal that the most important success factors for women in management include achievement orientation, resilience, self-confidence, passion and continuous learning. Additionally, the study highlights significant barriers such as work-life balance challenges, self-imposed perfectionism, the “glass ceiling” and difficulties in securing funding. The study concludes that while each woman’s success journey is personal, common traits such as goal orientation, adaptability and strong communication skills are crucial. Also, it provides practical recommendations for women aspiring to executive roles on how to achieve professional success, emphasizing the importance of setting clear goals and being resilient, education, passion, self-confidence and continuous improvement of personal and professional competencies. By addressing these areas, women can better steer through the challenges of achieving professional success in Spain’s business environment.
